Chandler
One of the fastest growing areas in the
country, Chandler’s population grew by 25% between 2000 and 2004
according to US census information. Often considered a bedroom
community serving the greater Phoenix Metropolitan area,
Chandler’s rapidly expanding population is composed of more than
40% of its households being families with children under 18
years old.
With such a large number of school-age
inhabitants, the Chandler Unified School District offers three
high schools (Chandler, Hamilton, and Basha High Schools) with
enrollments of 2,500 or more along with 28 elementary and Junior
High Schools.
Originally an agricultural town, growing
cotton, corn and alfalfa, Chandler was formed at the turn of the
century by the Arizona Territory’s first veterinary surgeon, Dr.
Alexander John Chandler. The town also relied strongly on
ostrich farming, a heritage which is now celebrated with an
annual ostrich festival. The festival, as seen in the 1995
Whitney Houston movie “Waiting to Exhale”, is an annual event
commemorating Chandler’s historical ties with ostrich ranching
with everything from an old-fashioned community parade featuring
local school marching bands and floats, to live musical
performances and a carnival.
The local economy, having moved away from ostrich
ranching as it’s primary resource, is now based on
manufacturing. Motorola and Intel are major names with
manufacturing plants providing local jobs for those who do not
commute into phoenix proper, and several other companies are
looking at Chandler as a possible location for future plants.
